Brenda Philips
Oil Painter, St. Augustine, FL
Although she is the great grand-niece of French Impressionist Claude Monet and was mentored by the late Emmett Fritz, Brenda Philips has earned recognition in her own right as one of the area’s top painters of St. Augustine’s marshes, historic streets and the beaches.
Philips at 54 is just hitting her stride creating her breathtaking clouds and skies, gorgeous water reflections, finding spectrums of color within her marshes and gaining a following of admirers both locally and nationally with her original paintings, signed giclées and matted prints.
Philips feels fortunate that her parents were supportive of her love of painting long before the family learned of the Monet connection through Giverny attorneys in the 1980s. “The Monet connection is just an interesting little historical tidbit,” she says, after traveling to Europe to see them in person. “When people compare my work to his paintings, that’s always a compliment.”
